So, split open the old transmission case yesterday and uncovered the failure from the wintertime... first gear (drive side) is seriously pitted and cracked (looks like a ductile failure). Time for a new input shaft. Sabrina tore down her axles to clean/re-pack/rebuild her CV joints on the SE-R. Thanks to Igg for getting pics of the axle work while I was working on my transmission.
