bike stuff

background

Pictured above is my 2009 Specialized Hardrock Disc, purchased at Belmont Wheelworks on March 31, 2009. The photo was taken less than two weeks after I got the bike, before I made any changes.

Since then, I've changed quite a few things, summarized and pictured below.

2009 Specialized Hardrock Disc
Frame Size 21"
Color Gloss Burgundy

Fork SR Suntour SF8-XCT-V2, 80mm travel
Brakes Avid BB7 (8" front, 6" rear) Got rid of stock Tektro IOX calipers when the pads wore out, since replacement pads were hard to source and the braking wasn't worth it.
Brake Levers Avid Speed Dial 7 Upgraded from stock Shimano EF-50 integrated brake/shifter levers.
Shift Levers Shimano Deore SL-M530 Upgraded from stock Shimano EF-50 to go from 7sp to 9sp.
Front Derailleur Shimano FD-C050 (top pull, top swing, triple cage)
Rear Derailleur Shimano RD-M772 Deore XT Shadow (long cage, top normal) Stock Shimano Altus derailleur was destroyed in a riding incident. Pics here.
Crankset Shimano FC-M770 Deore XT 44/32/22 teeth Upgraded from stock (piece of junk) Shimano FC-M191 (42/34/24). I was getting some bad creaking/popping/ticking noises, and stock crank and BB were incompatible with pretty much everything else. Also will allow me to fit a bashguard, alternate chainrings, and generally use more modern components.
Pedals Shimano PD-MX30 DX Stock plastic pedals developed bearing wobble at ~50 miles.
Bottom Bracket Shimano SM-BB70, External Bearing, 1.37 x 24 TPI, English Thread Replaced stock cartridge-style JIS square spindle (FSA BB7420, 122.5mm spindle, 68mm, Shimano clone) when I upgraded to the FC-M770 XT crank.
Rear Cogs SRAM PG-970 11-32t 9 speed Replaced stock Shimano FW723 14-34t 7s freewheel and CS-HG50 14-32t 7sp when I upgraded shifters and brakes.
Chain SRAM PC-970
Seatpost Specialized alloy two bolt, micro adjust, 30.9mm diameter
Saddle Specialized Avatar Gel 155 Body Geometry Stock Specialized XC BG (143mm) too narrow for my 160+mm sitbones. Replaced with Specialized Milano Gel 175 BG, which was nice, but too large and unwieldy on off-road descents. Avatar is still comfortable, but lighter and narrower.
Handlebar HL ATB-AL-170 580mm flat bar Switched from stock (Specialized Hi-Ten low riser) to get a narrower, flatter cockpit.
Grips Bontrager Lock-On grips, Specialized A1 Dirt Rodz bar ends Hand numbness on longer rides (10+ miles), needed more give and some alternate hand positions.
Stem Bontrager Race ATB 25 degree 70mm Upgraded from stock (Specialized forged alloy) to shorten the cockpit a bit when I went to a less swept handlebar. This should also give me slightly faster handling and a bit more leverage when trying to get the front wheel up.
Headset Cane Creek (1 1/8", loose ball, OEM to Specialized)
Front Wheel
Hub Shimano Deore XT HB-M756
Rim Mavic EX325 (36 hole)
Spokes Wheelsmith (2.0/1.7/2.0mm) double-butted, brass nipples (4x weave)
Built by Universal Cycles.
Rear Wheel
Hub Shimano Deore XT FH-M756
Rim Mavic EX325 (36 hole)
Spokes Wheelsmith (2.0/1.8/2.0mm) double-butted, brass nipples (4x weave)
Stock rear freewheel hub was failing consistently (bending axles on every ride under pedal load). The freehub (with better bearing placement) fixed the problem completely. For more information on freehub vs. freewheel designs, see this page on the advantages of freehubs.

Built by Universal Cycles.

Tires
Front WTB Velociraptor 26x2.1"
Rear WTB Velociraptor 26x2.1"
Tried Specialized Fast Trak LK (not enough grip on New England singletrack), and Panaracer Smoke and Dart Classic (front end washed out on soft terrain, tall, soft knobs weren't stable at speed on hardpack). Velociraptors feel good so far, similar feel to the Smoke and Dart but without the washouts and instability.
