so, uh, about that...

Yesterday, I said that today would be a brand new day for this country.

If only I had known just how new it would be. The House of Representatives has a democrat majority, the Senate is projected to have the same, and Donald Rumsfeld has resigned from the Secretary of Defense. Apparently, Rumsfeld's resignation has been on the table for at least a few days, before the election... but that doesn't make it any less shocking, or, indeed, welcome.

The international press is showing a level of positivity towards the US that I don't recall seeing since we invaded Iraq. Talking to a friend last night, he mentioned that "Rumsfeld is this generation's McNamara." Today, I realized that Ashcroft was this generation's McCarthy, and Bush... well, his dishonesty and failures might lead one to draw parallels to Nixon, but it would be too good to be true to have Bush decide to resign from office... and I'm not sure that Cheney (I'll shoot Saddam in the face with my shotgun!), Hastert (Oops, I ate the weapons of mass destruction.), Stevens (The executive branch is a series of tubes!), Pelosi (Guns are BAD!), or Byrd (When's the lynchin'?) would do any better.

I'm usually not overtly political on this blog, but I can't help but gloat a little bit on behalf of the rational people of this nation. Time for a change, indeed.
