morning motivation...

I have a problem... every morning, usually at 6:45, the alarm goes off. I smack the snooze button, roll over, and curl up with sabs for eight blissful minutes until the alarm begins another cycle of plaintive electronic bleating. We get up, proceed directly to the couch, where we lounge about, usually watching the previous night's Daily Show from the DVR. Around 7:30, sabs gets up from the couch, prepares for her day, and departs by around 7:45.

Typically, at this point, my day becomes a blur. Flipping through the channels, watching re-runs of Modern Marvels and Casino Diaries, or some documentary on the Discovery Times Channel... then to the computer, where I manage to spend an hour checking blogs, forums, news, weather, usually ending with some rambling trip across the magical land of learning that is WikiPedia.

By this point, I've somehow managed to burn well over an hour, and it's well past 9. Stumbling to the shower and commencing my morning grooming routine, I finally stagger out of the apartment at nearly 10:15. Coffee is a mandatory stop, and occasionally fuel, enroute to the office, where I'm lucky to arrive before 11AM.

It happens like this practically every morning -- and it's really, really annoying. I end up staying at the office until 7 or so every night, come home late, go to sleep late, and the whole cycle begins anew.

I'm usually not the type of person who demands structure, but I think it's time to impose some rigid timing to my morning. I lose two hours of my life a day with nothing to show for it besides a new understanding of the alloys used in the construction of the Statue of Liberty, diamond mining, or how to make money at video poker. Somehow, I don't think it's worth it.
