male nesting...

It's started happening... It all started when sabs had her mom up to visit towards the end of August. The two of them spent a week digging through the stacks of unpacked boxes and computer equipment, converting our second bedroom from an oversized "not-really-walk-in because-there's-too-much-crap" closet back into a usable office/workspace. They proceeded to clean up and enliven the apartment, making a much more livable place... it was like moving to a whole new apartment without the pain of actually moving.

Ever since, I've been taking on little projects... it all started with a wooden entertainment center to hold all of our A/V gear, home theater PC, and TV. Then came a long, low shelf to live below the projector screen area and hold DVDs, papers, speakers, and other stuff. A few weeks ago, my efforts culminated in the construction of a large wooden riser, about 11" high, to hold a sofa and end-table as our "second tier" seating in the living room.

This weekend, I found myself watching episodes of While You Were Out, Clean Sweep, Wood Works, and This Old House, and regaling sabs with fond memories of watching The Woodwright's Shop as a kid.

It was after my third episode of Clean Sweep, when sabs had to physically remove me from the TV, that I realized that I was ... nesting. A stereotypically female term, described best by erin (albeit, in distinctly different context) as "the older, fatter, kid-heavy sister" [of getting married]. Here I was, in possession of a complete, functional Y chromosome, thinking about carpet colors, cornices, window valances, furniture styles, tung oil, and power tools.

So, I did what any self-respecting young person, male or female, does while nesting. I grabbed my significant other and went shopping.

We returned with some new glassware (four rocks/DOF glasses and four hi-balls), some colorful stoneware mini-bowls (for ingredients/condiments), a silicone basting brush, a super-wide spatula, and more little glass ingredient bowls. We returned home, and after an early Christmas gift of a beautiful bamboo cutting board and a minor furniture malfunction, I cooked up a fine dinner of pan-seared salmon, sauteed shrimp with garlic, and crab cakes.

Now, I'm trying to figure out plans and come up with a lumber purchase list for constructing a new platform bed and a window cornice for our sliding glass door. Add that to plans for putting some carpeting on the sofa riser and some new blackout material and drapes for the aforementioned sliding glass door, and I have a serious case of male nesting.

I can't say that I really mind, though.
